Descendents Live 1997

enjoy. the descendents are literally the best punk band of their nature, ever. period. When Everything Sucks came out, it changed my life. This video shows how powerful of a live band they are, milo doesn't even miss a beat. Bill Stevenson is a tank and is one of the best drummers ever. I will always drink way too much coffee and love the descendents. "Meelo, you have mud on your face"

"We are a direct product of the combination of a hardcore and punk culture. After devoting a majority of our present lives to it, we felt we had an overwhelming view into how much potential it could contain if certain aspects of it were destroyed. Our entire reason for existing is, to quote Spacemen 3, so "things will never be the same again". Our ambition is fueled solely by our own selfish wants and desires, while at the same time maintaining a direct networking relationship to people who share the same ideas of existing in a freethinking society. We think that people should be able to fully express themselves without fear of unacceptance or shun from their peers. This band is about expression of ideas and music, which definitely isn't a new concept, but rather a concept that has been bogged down by the overall scene politics dictating a "who's cool hierarchy". We're taking the risks and having a laugh at our own expense so people may be inspired to take action in achieving their own personal goals, just like we are."

Steve's editing skills at work. Its awesome when you editor quotes, "whats up with them lowercase letters? " in the footnotes. I also love that steve curses throughout the editing process in the margins. He did a great job though, and after this I feel much more confident that one day I can write a complete sentence. Honestly,he is such a huge help.
Sorry jay this book is taking a while longer than expected, already past three deadlines. I am really happy that we did a test press of a rough draft. It's been great and I am so much happier already with the direction the book is going. Hopefully its worth the wait, it will be complete very soon. Now just finalizing editing and layout. Jay has been great to work with, almost done !

Born Against Vs. Sick Of It All Hardcore Debate

Debate - born against - sick of it all - 01

Debate - born against - sick of it all - 01 from http://soup.vox.com/

There are 6 parts of this interview. I think its really great because this debate still has relevance now with Hardcore being so marketable and successful on a grander scale. In the early nineties with hardcore breaking out, obviously major labels were interested. And although I agree with bands being able to be successful and get their music out to the most people as possible, I can't help but to cringe when I hear sick of it all boldly state certian things to get their record in wal-marts and chain stores. Censoring your lyrics and artwork would be greatly upsetting to Born Against, a band thats defiant artwork and lyrics were the heart of the bands purpose. New York was greatly important to hardcore throughout the nineties, and Sick Of It All got more than the attention they should have. My argument is that Born Against gets a different kind of attention and respect that they earned by their own means, without catering to wal-mart and chain stores. The kind of hardcore kids that really had heart would gladly wait a few months for a record in the mail. That was part of what made it so special and personal. I understand what Sick Of It All was trying to do, but I don't appreciate the way they make Born Against seem unsuccessful by not having played bigger venues, and have had sold more records. When Sick of It makes them seem uncreditable because they didn't see them at the shows they went to growing up you kind of have to laugh a little too. SOIA basically states that playing bigger venues is more desirable than abc no rio or smaller venues and I just disagree. I think that born against shows to 75 kids at ABC is just as important as SOIA playing sold out shows at city gardens. It gets really personal at the end. Its definately still relevant even today.

Toning down a record, in any manner to me is inexcusable. Its a dangerous road to go down. Your taking a vital part of the music out by not including lyrics to compromise where the record is going to be sold. If Born Against only pressed 1,000 copies of a record and it got out to 1,000 kids and each copied it for two of their friends that is now thousands of people exposed to your band. And that is a much more personal way to do it. I love old SOIA, but I really believe in what Born Against was trying to do and always will. I know this post is a little lame, but Born Against is one of my favorite bands of all time. What they did is under the radar but is hugely important. Hope you find this a little entertaining, if you can listen to the whole 6 parts.

Writing a Presentation on Customer Interaction and Selling Accordingly

Is nowhere near as fun as writing a book about:

-growing up
-being let down
-being picked back
-being let down again

with a cover of jackie, and a rare cover of joel as a skinhead in 1999..

its actually completely crummy. good old corporate hell had to creep into the one sacred ground I had of writing.

It will be the best godamn presentation the wireless world has ever seen. Let them creep in

Prideswallower- Lifeswallower 7"

So. fucking. great. Good old louisville rock and silkscreened gatefold...

the A-Side is way hookier and the B-Side is just heavy and punk and great...

one of my favorite seven inches I have come across recently

This is inspiring me to set up my mp3 turntable just to rip this so I can post it.

Shore Mall 1986

For Jay.

Its weird, both malls jay and I grew up going to are on deadmalls.com Echelon and Shore. My mom had a little kiosk she owned in echelon in the early to mid ninety's, so I grew up there. Echelon had a dollar theater that was awesome, you could see movies that were a few weeks older, and classic ones too. I remember seeing star wars there every day after school about 5 or 6 days in a row. Also, buying tapes at the wall, and the store flashbacks e.t.c, but I am going to dedicate a whole post to that later on. yep yep.

Nirvana- Live and Loud 1994

Anything I try to say about this will in no way give it justice. This in my opinion, is the best live set that documents this band. I remember staying up late to watch this when it aired. I was in lutheran grade school, and we had a debate where Nirvana was brought up and it had me really interested in what all the talk was about. I didn't quite get it when I was watching it, ( I was 10 years old ) but I remember being glued to the TV cause I had never seen anything like it. Funny thing is, even 14 years later I Still really haven't seen anything like it. The story goes that Pearl Jam was supposed to split the show with Nirvana, but they bailed last minute and Nirvana gladly stepped up to take the whole show. I wish pearl jam would stop making music, but thats another story.

I owe everything to this band. I am the kind of nerd who researches bands influences and all that stuff. Me and Rich rode bikes to Tunes on the boardwalk in the 8th grade to buy My Bloody Valentine cause Billy Corgan said Siamese Dream was his homage to that band. I got into Joy Division cause of the Nine inch Nails cover on the crow soundtrack. Nirvana is directly what got me into punk and hardcore, and most everyone else my age as well. The mid-nineties were a great time to be discovering it too, so we lucked out.

Just the opening with Pat Smears unmatched attitude says it all. Right before he tosses the cigarette and they go into the riff, that imagery has stayed with me since I first saw this in 1994. I always wanted Jumpercable to open future sets with the Radio Friendly Unit Shifter intro Riff, it would rule. I know this post seems like another one where I try to seem awesome. I am awesome, and so is this video. eeeeeeeeeeeyyyyaah. seriously though, video rules.

Enjoy this, all the parts are on youtube, it really is amazing...

Casket Lottery- Possibilities and Maybes LP

while were on the subject, I also lucked out with this gem. Ordered several, got only one and took one. Hopefully it gets back in stock for the summer, vinyl collective has a white one and a black one for order...this one is clear. Clear vinyl always looks awesome, (nerd alert) this is a cool pressing cause theres white in the clear, but it looks to be unintentional.

Most importantly, this record is awesome and this band is awesome. Under the radar bigtime for how big Small Brown Bike ended up, I think this band is miles ahead of them even though musically they are both very different. The only room for comparison really is they released a split together. I think lottery is as good as texas is the reason, and thats really musically the closest comparison. yada yada

Anyway, only about 3 people read this blog and most of them already know and love this band, but if you haven't listened yet you should.

I think casket lottery should spoof the whole misfits coffin box and do a discography of the same nature. yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag. (nerd alert pt. 2)

Floor-Dove

..and the latest installment of bragging rights record scores. Today I found myself with an old friend selling records on my day off and enjoying overcast gray weather all day, riding my bike around my favorite resort town. And best of all, a copy of FLOOR - DOVE on GREEN swirl vinyl. Its a No Idea release, so keeping up with the different colors is almost impossible. Green is only 303 copies, we have blue at the store too. Awesome record. Outrageously heavy, downtuned doom masterpiece. The story of the album is pretty neat too.

"The entire second side of the record is inhabited by "Dove", an eighteen minute torrent, replete with rivers of feedback and the signature FLOOR double guitar stagger and punch. Welcome to FLOOR’s legendary, long-lost first album, recorded in 1994, but cryptically, mysteriously never released... until now! Be warned: this is raw and direct, pulverizing and intense, with melodic undertones and a dark groove building and exploding! Your ears will never be the same! " - from no idea

Catherine Wheel-Show Me Mary 1993

There's no reason why this single shouldn't be one of your favorite songs from the band. Catherine Wheel is the jawbreaker of shoegaze, and this song is their chesterfield king. Great song, period. And a rather enjoyable video with all the benefits of great 90's video's at their prime. Pre taxicab confessions..old women, overly confident singers, elvis impersonators, black guys in skinny ties...all backed by an incredible song of an amazing album, ladies and gentlemen, catherine wheel struck gold with this one

It was never my intention to brag...

but I think I'm gonna change the format of this whole blog exclusively to the following:

- awesome things from the 90's
- records that I own that are incredible
- pictures of joel as a tradition skinhead
- awesome barack obama merchandise

Nine Inch Nails - Gave Up 1992

Here is the video for the single "Gave Up" off Nine Inch Nails 1992 release of the Broken EP. This album is awesome, and my favorite release by the band. Look for a video cameo of a young Marilyn Manson and Rich Patrick, vocalist for Filter on guitars. They were both briefly in Nine Inch Nails during this period. This is my favorite era of the band, and one of my favorite early 90's singles.

Baby we were born to write run on sentences....

Test press is in ! The cover of Joel as an obvious traditional skinhead youth is incredible. Its hard to believe that picture is over 10 years old. The font is a little off, and the layout needs work and it is now in the stages of relentless editing. Thanks to Jay for printing a generous run of test presses. Also, thanks to Steve Sheckelton for taking on the role of Editior, which is pretty brutal due to the fact I can barely spell, have no grammar and love run on sentences.
Thanks to the help of great friends, and new ones like Jackie, Maro, Jay and Steve this book should turn out great.

Settle Down City

thanks to john lamb, I now have a one of 50 YOUNG WIDOWS winter 08 press of Settle Down City, with an alternate cover silkcreened by Nick from Widows. It basically turned into a friends press due to the fact is was such a small press.

Story goes that every time you press a record, you always have left over records without sleeves. Nick found about 50 or so Settle Down Lp's, made new artwork, screened it and sold the rest of the press, limited out of 50.

I know this is a typical bragging rights post, but really am stoked to have this in my growing YW collection. Most radical.
